What You Need Before Bringing Rats Home
Getting set up before your rats arrive is key to a smooth transition. Here's what you'll need:
- Cage — minimum 2 cubic feet per rat, bar spacing no wider than 1/2 inch for standard rats, 1/4 inch for dwarfs
- Bedding — paper-based or hemp, avoid cedar and pine shavings
- Food — quality lab block as a base, supplemented with fresh foods
- Water bottle or bowl
- Hideouts and hammocks — rats need places to sleep and feel secure
- Enrichment toys — ropes, tunnels, foraging toys
- Litter box — rats can be litter trained!
